Nissan LEAF Vs. Hyundai Ioniq Electric

By Justin Cupler | July 5th, 2019

A lot has changed in the electric vehicle market, as EV ranges have soared, prices have dropped, and performance has increased with advancements in technology. Two of the latest EVs, the redesigned 2019 Nissan LEAF and the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Electric. Which one is better for your family? Find out here?

Exterior

The LEAF was all-new in 2019, bringing in a new, more traditional design, aligning it with the latest trend in the EV segment. This new look also adds a dose of sportiness the model had lacked since its debut. This all made the new-generation LEAF a more palatable model for the masses.

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric is also relatively new, having just debuted back in 2017. Like the LEAF, the Ioniq is a more traditional looking EV, but its looks are even more mainstream than the LEAF with its sleek body lines and coupe-like roofline. The Ioniq is also smaller and lighter than the LEAF, making it easier to maneuver in tight spaces like parking garages and heavy city traffic

Measurement 2019 Nissan LEAF 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Difference
Length 176.4 inches 176 inches +0.4 inches
Width 70.5 inches 71.7 inches -1.2 inches
Height 61.4 inches 57.1 inches +4.3 inches

Ground Clearance 5.9 inches
Curb weight 3,433 to 3,853 pounds 3,164 to 3,285 pounds +269 to +568 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Hyundai Ioniq

  • Sleek, stylish body
  • Very traditional looking
  • Smaller and easier to maneuver

Advantage: 2019 Nissan LEAF

  • Rigid body lines
  • Sporty hatchback profile

Interior

The Nissan LEAF dropped its funky styling with its 2018 redesign, bringing in a clean, organized cabin that includes a well laid-out center stack, flat-bottom steering wheel, electronic gear shifter, and sporty, well-padded seats.

The 2019 Hyundai Ioniq also boasts a clean cabin with many of the same looks as the LEAF, including its uncluttered dashboard, flat-bottom steering wheel, push-button transmission, and more. It lacks the sporty seats the LEAF boasts, dragging its style down a bit

The 2019 LEAF comes equipped with a decent number of standard features, including a 5-inch infotainment screen, a 7-inch gauge cluster, power windows, and more. Sadly, it cannot hang with the base Ioniq Electric, which includes a 7-inch high-resolution touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, and more.

In roominess, the Ioniq has more space than the LEAF in every key measurable except cargo room.

Cargo room (seats folded) 30 cubic feet

Advantage: 2019 Hyundai Ioniq

  • Roomier seating arrangement
  • More standard tech features

Advantage: 2019 Nissan LEAF

  • Tons of upscale options
  • Sharp cab design

Performance

Performance was not something most people looked in the EV segment for in its early years, but today’s EV’s make great use of their instantly available torque and energy-dense batteries.

The 2019 Nissan LEAF’s electric motor delivers a respectable 147 horsepower and a potent 236 pound-feet of torque for a 7.5-second 0-to-60 time. The LEAF PLUS pushes the power to 214 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque, and its 62-kWh battery pushes its range up to 226 miles while dropping its acceleration time to 6.5 seconds.

The 2019 Hyundai ioniq Electric isn’t as potent as the LEAF, as its electric motor cranks out 118 horsepower and 218 pound-feet of torque or an 8.6-second 0-to-60 time. A 28-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery fuels this motor and delivers a 124-mile driving range. While this range is shorter, this is a more efficient setup as the EPA rates it at 136 MPGe, while the EPA rates the LEAF at 112 MPGe and the LEAF PLUS at 104 to 108 MPGe.
