Nissan Launches Revised 2020 GT-R NISMO

By Justin Cupler | April 18th, 2019

Since its launch in 2009, the Nissan GT-R has remained structurally the same, but it’s been through tons of under-the-skin updates to make it more powerful, better handling, and more. The 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO will continue this trend with only mild visual updates and a handful of performance improvements.

On the outside, the 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO drops an extra 23 pounds relative to the base GT-R thanks to extensive carbon-fiber use on the front and rear bumpers, front fenders, hood, roof, side sill covers, trunk, and rear spoiler. The front fenders also gain new scalloped vents like on the GT3 GT-R to pull hot air away from the engine and enhance downforce. Nissan also focused on aerodynamics by smoothing out the body and avoiding excessive air contact with the rear spoiler. Rounding out the exterior updates are lighter 20-inch RAYS aluminum wheels wrapped in wider Dunlop tires that increase road contact by 11%.

Inside, the 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO features reworked front seats that focus on securing the shoulder blades and lower body, giving the driver a better sense of connection with the car.

Under the skin, there are tons more updates, starting with a revised 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine. There are no power updates, but a modified turbo turbine and fewer fins enhance flow rate and acceleration response by 20% without falling under the 600-horsepower mark. This V-6 engine dumps its spent fuel and air through a revised titanium exhaust system. Paired to this twin-turbo V-6 engine is an updated six-speed dual-clutch transmission with a new “R Mode” that delivers quicker shifts and better gear selection.

Handling all this power is a focus of the 2020 GT-R NISMO. It comes with an updated chassis with enhanced yaw-rate response and a smoother ride. At the corners, enlarged carbon-ceramic rotors reduce unsprung weight and increase stopping power while new brake pad material delivers steady and firm braking with less pressure from the driver. Squeezing these updated pads are new, high-rigidity calipers painted in yellow.
